After leaving Luton, Lewis trialled for Wycombe Wanderers with 1st team goalkeeping coach Martin Brennan. Martin, an experienced and well respected goalkeeping coach, immediately recognised Lewis’ talents, and after their first training session, approached The Academy Manager with a recommendation that Wycombe should sign him.
On 25th February 2011, at the age of 12, Lewis signed as an academy player with Wycombe Wanderers FC and played in the 2010/11 and 2011/12 seasons for The Chairboys. During his time at Wycombe, Lewis played every game for the U12’s and U13’s, competing against the likes of his former club Luton Town FC, QPR FC, Portsmouth FC, Leyton Orient FC, Brentford FC, Brighton & Hove Albion FC and Watford FC. Lewis worked closely with Martin Brennan throughout his time at Wycombe, until Martin moved to Fulham FC.
In 2012, Lewis was invited to tour Holland with Wycombe Wanderers, which offered him the opportunity to play against PSV Eindhoven, Ajax, AZ Alkmaar and other quality Dutch academies.
Again, the experience of travelling with the team and playing against strong European opposition has been of significant benefit to Lewis.
Unfortunately at the end of the 2011/12 season, Wycombe Wanderers had to close their Youth Academy due to funding issues; a very disappointing outcome, given that many quality players had come through their academy and moved on to full time professional careers. These included Liverpool’s Jordon Ibe, QPR Goalkeeper Matt Ingraham, QPR player Matt Phillips and Wolves defender Roger Johnson.
Lewis left Wycombe with considerable regret but as the Wycombe Academy closed its doors, another door opened and Lewis was offered an immediate trial with QPR FC.
