After the unfortunate closure of the Wycombe Wanderers Academy, Lewis was offered a trial in pre-season at Premier League QPR FC. Head of Academy goalkeeping, Dean Thornton, offered Lewis a one year contract, which Lewis accepted. Lewis has supported QPR and been a season ticket holder since the age of 8, so to be offered the opportunity to play for the club he supports, and a club that had just been promoted to the Premier League, was exceptionally exciting for the 13 year old. Lewis subsequently played for QPR FC at U14, U15, U16, U18 and U21 levels.
During his first season as a QPR player, Lewis continued to play against many of the teams that he had encountered whilst at Luton and Wycombe, but now had the opportunity to play against the leading Premier League academies including Tottenham, Arsenal, Chelsea, West Ham and Manchester City.
At the end of his first season at QPR FC, Lewis had made a significant impression at the club and was offered a further two year contract, taking him up to school leaving age.
During the following two seasons, Lewis continued to progress as a goalkeeper. In addition to training with QPR, Lewis continued to work twice a week with his private trainer, Sean Griffiths. The quality training, advice and guidance that Lewis has received from Sean over the years has enabled him to develop his goalkeeping skills at a faster rate than would be expected.
On 19th September 2014, at the age of 15, and only 6 weeks into his U16 season, Lewis was awarded a two year scholarship with QPR FC. He was informed that he would continue to play for the under 16s, given that he was still at school, but would have opportunities to play for the under 18s before his scholarship commenced in July 2015.
On September 27th 2014, whilst still a 15 year old school boy, Lewis made his U18 debut for QPR against Birmingham City, coming off the bench in the second half.
During the 2014/15 season, Lewis made six more appearances for the U18’s squad.
Lewis commenced his scholarship on 30th June 2015 and the following month, at the age of 16, he was called up to travel with the QPR first team and U21 squad, to Italy & Switzerland, on a Pre-Season Tour.
Lewis made his U21 debut in Italy on July 13th 2015 against Calcio, keeping a clean sheet. He played again, in Switzerland, on July 18th 2015 against Lugano, once again keeping a clean sheet. During his time in Italy, Lewis trained with Robert Green, QPR first team goalkeeper.
On his return from Italy, Lewis was once more involved with the U21’s, playing in a Pre-season friendly against Kings Langley, the club where he started his career, at the age of 9, whilst also on the bench for a fixture with Hendon.
After all the excitement of the summer, Lewis made his U18 league debut on 8th August 2015 against Huddersfield Town. He played a further 7 games for U18s and a further 3 games for the U21 squad before leaving QPR on 30th September 2015.
Lewis decided to leave QPR for a number of reasons but felt the move was beneficial to further his career. After much deliberation, he concluded that playing regular 1st team men’s football would offer him a better opportunity to progress his career, and at a greater rate, than U18’s academy football could provide.
Whilst playing 1st team football was important to Lewis, he was only too aware that on-going, high quality training was essential to his continued development. After making enquiries, Lewis was offered many full time goalkeeper training opportunities with other league clubs but chose a Premier League club that had a great reputation for bringing young players through.
